1. Overview
Understanding a language is not the same as being able to use it accurately and confidently. In fact, many language learners reach a point where they can read or listen comfortably, yet struggle to produce the language naturally. Lingua Breeze was designed specifically for this so-called intermediate plateau. Rather than offering lessons, structured curricula, or gamified progresson, the app provides a focused environment for practicing real and personally-relevant sentences with high-quality audio and translations.
By design, Lingua Breeze favors deliberate practice over passive consumption. The app is intended to complement—not replace—a learner’s existing input-heavy language learning activities. Instead of pushing users through predefined content, the app is a simple and effective tool for motivated learners to get the reps they need to turn comprehension into confident use.
The app is designed to be flexible and useful to learners of various learning styles and needs. By removing the friction typically associated with identifying and organizing relevant sentences, translating them, generating natural audio, and configuring complex audio playback for effective practice, Lingua Breeze makes intentional language practice both user-friendly and efficient.
2. Getting Started
The app itself is built around an incredibly powerful, yet simple-to-understand concept. So, the best way to get started is to just jump right in and explore the app.
2.1. Sign in
The first time you sign in, you’ll be prompted to define the following key settings for your account. These settings can be updated later from your account settings, which is accessible from the profile dropdown menu.
- Reference language: This is the canonical source of truth for your sentences, typically your native language.
- Target languages: These are the languages you would like to practice.
- Voice preferences: These will define the audio generation parameters to be used for each of your languages. Note that the voice settings here are forward looking and do not affect any previously generated sentence audio. If you would like to change the voice settings of previously generated sentence audio, you will need to regenerate that audio from the sentence browser workspace after you update your voice preference settings.
- Daily practice goal: This is a simple daily practice goal that personalizes the metrics shown in your dashboard.
Note
Since the reference language serves as a canonical source of truth in your sentence database, once you’ve started adding sentences, you won’t be able to change your reference language anymore. To use another language as support when practicing your target language, see section below for multilingual practice features.
2.2. Basic navigation
The app is organized around three primary views: the Dashboard, the Workspace, and the Player.
- After signing in, the Dashboard provides an overview of your practice activity as well as all your sentence lists.
- Sentence lists can be browsed in the Workspace view, which provides options to arrange and edit individual sentence text and/or audio.
- The Player is the main practice engine and provides advanced audio playback configuration for effective sentence-based drills.
For those that use the app to practice multiple target languages, the language selector in the top menu bar allows you to switch between target languages contexts.
Note
Sentences are target language specific. For a sentence to appear in a particular target language context, it must have been either (1) created within that target language context, (2) specifically made available in that target language context, or (3) exist in a list that is syned with that target language context.
2.3. Add your sentences
After logging in, click on the Add Sentences button to add sentences to your personal sentence database. The Add Sentence dialog will open with options for you to add sentences in your reference language (default) or directly in your target language. Sentences you add in either language will be automatically translated into the other.
Organize with lists
All sentences added to your database are automatically added to the “All Sentences” list of your current target language context. Optionally, you can choose to have them added to specific user-created lists as well. User-created lists allow you to organize your sentences in a way that makes sense to you. It is common to use lists to organize sentences by topic, communicative task, situational context, formality, grammatical complexity, or whatever else makes sense to you. Individual sentences can be added to as many lists as desired.
Generate audio and translations
When adding sentences from the Add Sentences dialog box, translations and audio are automatically generated. Voice preferences for the audio generation are based on what you selected in your user settings. These can be changed at any time, but will not be retroactively applied to any existing audio.
Sentence text and translations can be edited from the Workspace. Also in the Workspace, bulk actions can be performed to regenerate translations or audio for selections of sentences.
2.4. Practice with audio drills
The easiest way to start a practice session is to click the “Practice” button for a particular sentence list. This will open up the Player in the most recent practice mode.
The sentence player has a number of settings that can be configured from the Playback Settings menu. Notably, you can select from several different preset Practice Modes or create your own. The play sequence for each practice mode is displayed for you to view and customize as needed. Custom modes can be saved and managed from your user settings.
- Listen and Learn (the default mode)
- Speed Builder
- Repeat Shadowing
- Rapid Fire
- Interpretation
- Dictation
Additionaly, in the main player window, there are options to swap the sentence position, to hide/show the sentence text, to edit the text, or to manually replay audio. These options can be particularly helpful in with certain practice modes (i.e. interpretation, dictation).
2.5. Archive and move on
As you practice sentences repetitively, they will eventually become second nature. When you no longer feel the need to actively practice them, archive them and move on. Sentences status (i.e. Archived or Practicing) can be changed in the following 2 ways:
- Within the Player, during a practice session, hover over the target sentence card and click “Mark as Archived” or “Mark as Practicing.”
- Within the Browser, select the sentence and click “Mark as Archived” or “Mark as Practicing” from the Actions dropdown menu.
Archived sentences can be viewed from the Workspace by selecting “Show Archived” from the View menu. Sentence status can be changed back to Practicing at any time from the Workspace. By default, archived sentences do not get queued for practice unless they are specifically selected.
3. Advanced Settings
3.1. Multiple target languages
Learners with multiple target languages will find it particularly useful that sentences can be shared across multiple target language contexts. This can be accomplished in the following ways:
- When adding sentences from the Add Sentences dialog, under Advanced Settings, select “Make available in other languages.” Identify which target languages you want the sentence to be added to. Sentence stubs (i.e. without translation or translation audio) will be added to the selected target language contexts. To add translations and translation audio, you will need to do so from the bulk Actions menu in the sentence Workspace in the specified target language context.
- When browsing sentences from the Workspace, selected sentences can be added to another target langauge context by selecting “Make available in other languages” from the bulk Actions menu.
- Synced Lists may be used to syncronize entire sentence lists across multiple target languages. Sentences added to synced lists will automatically be available in all the language contexts the list is synced to. To sync a list across multiple target languages, select “Sync Languages” in the list’s options menu (identified by ellipses) from the Dashboard. Sentences stubs will be added automatically to the selected target language contexts within the synced list. To add translations and translation audio, you will need to do so from the bulk Actions menu in the sentence Workspace in the specified target language context.
- A special feature of synced lists is the ability to view additional languages in place of your reference language. Within a synced list, selecting the reference language header opens a dropdown to select which language you want to view in place of your reference language.
- When triggering a practice session from the Workspace with an alternate language in place of your reference language, you will have the option to select which support language to use in your practice session. Note, in practice sessions with an alternate support language, if a sentence is missing support language translation or audio, the reference language will be used instead.
3.2. Custom practice modes
Playback modes may be customized with up to 10 playback steps. For each step, you can select which language to play, playback speed, and define a trailing pause between steps.
Playback settings can be customized ad hoc, or saved as user-defined presets. Saved presets may be managed from your account settings.
4. Purchases
4.1. Generation credits
Translations and audio are generated using credits. New accounts will have a starting balance of credits that allow you to learn and familiarize yourself with the app. When you run out of credits, you may purchase packs of more credits from your account settings page.
4.2. Practice Pass
Every 30 days, users will have access to 5 hours of playback on the Practice Player. Users needing more practice time can purchase a Practice Pass for unlimited playback on the Practice Player. Practice Passes may be purchased from your account settings page.
5. Further Support
